Meet Steve Lees, Blue Square Utilities’ CEO

There is plenty going on here at Blue Square Utilities (BSU) HQ, and we’re particularly proud of the team behind the scenes that continues to drive the organisation forwards. Some people have been here for years, and others a few short months, but each one deserves their moment in the spotlight.

And, what better way to launch our new blog series than by getting to know a little more about our CEO, Steve Lees?

What’s the best part of your job?

Meeting lots of people – from welcoming new starters to engaging with prospective clients and everything in between. I have a clear picture of how a good business should be run for the benefit of all concerned, and there has to be a genuine partnership between colleagues, customers and shareholders. When all parties are aligned, you can make special things happen.

What do you see as a ‘job well done’?

Success can be hard to measure at times. During 2020, its been about survival as we navigated our way through COVID-19. Looking ahead though, it will be profitable growth that allows us to secure, and create, new careers.

How do you think BSU differentiates itself from its competitors?

Our culture and environment are the key. I believe in ‘autonomy, mastery and purpose’ as the driving force – look up a book called ‘Drive’ by Dan Pink to find out more.

Everyone at BSU is here because they bring something to the table that makes the business stronger. They each have a voice, and are encouraged to use it, to ensure we get a broad range of views and ideas – which ultimately makes for better decision making.

What three words do you think best describe BSU?

Resilient, honest, and driven.

What’s the first thing you do when you get home on a Friday evening?

Take my four dogs out for a walk to kill some time before the takeaway is delivered.

Where is the best place in the UK for a two-day getaway?

I am blessed to live on the coast in Northumberland. There is no better place to relax, unwind and enjoy this incredible country, so I would say Bamburgh. It feels to me like I live ‘on holiday’.

This song is on heavy Spotify rotation and here’s why…

What’s Spotify? I am a huge Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath fan (yes, I am stuck in the 1970s). I listen to their greatest hits album most weeks and ‘War Pigs’ is the best song ever written and performed.

If we were to spend a day box set binging, what series would you recommend we watch?

Bosch – on Amazon Prime.

How does your ideal Sunday pan out?

I like to enjoy a quiet weekend, chilling with family and my dogs, watching some box sets and pottering about in the garden. Rock ‘n’ roll, yes?
